New York City-based painter Elizabeth O'Reilly's work features small paintings straddling two different worlds: Brooklyn cityscapes-primarily of the Gowanus Canal area -- and rural locales in County Mayo and County Clare, Ireland.

Both realms provide ample evidence of O'Reilly's loose, active brushwork and her preference for pure color and form. Most of the cityscapes embody places caught between use and abandonment, counterbalanced by the timelessness of Irish landscapes that both soothe and compel, where mercurial skies and sweeping contours of land beckon the eye onward towards mountains or seacoast.

O'Reilly seeks out spots where grace is not always in the obvious places: sites where nature and vestiges of human presence intertwine. The water stillness of cityscapes inspired by the Gowanus Canal find sympathetic juxtaposition against the mysterious environs of The Burren, in County Clare.
